Stamping on textiles? Our guide!
- Jan 11, 2021
Being creative with stamps is not that difficult. On a paper or cardboard surface you can easily stamp all kinds of original designs and logos.
But you can also take it to the next level by printing on fabric. Read below what to pay attention to when stamping on fabric.
STAMPING ON FABRIC: WHICH STAMPS?
Most stamps are suitable for both stamping on paper and stamping on fabric. It is just a question of using the correct ink. The ink for stamping textiles must be washable and resistant to high temperatures. It is easy to find the right textile ink for your project in specialised shops or hobby shops. You can also ask an expert for advice if you are not sure about choosing the right stamping ink.
WHICH FABRICS TO STAMP ON?
Not all fabrics are easy to stamp on. The best and easiest fabric surface to stamp on is 100% cotton. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester and acrylic are said to be somewhat more 'printable', but this is not the case in all cases. In order to avoid mistakes it is always advisable to do a test print on a small sample piece of fabric first.
USEFUL TIPS FOR STAMPING ON FABRIC
The first thing to do is to prepare the working area, which is why we have listed below some tips and tricks for you.
If you take these guidelines into account, nothing can go wrong!
- To mark clothes or cushions that you obviously do not want to print on the back as well, use a thick cardboard as a base and place it between the front and back of the surfaces to prevent the ink from being transferred to the parts you do not want to mark.
- Observe the weave of the fabric. The tighter the weave, the finer the print will be. Coarse yarn also logically offers a rougher decoration.
- Always do a test on a sample before starting the real work.
- Keep a container with water and some cleaning cloths handy, printing on fabrics is a pleasant activity, but be prepared for stains.
